This property Has been owned by the same family for approximately 200 years. Probably the most notorious owner at one time was the first Viscount of Cacongo, Joao Jose Rodrigues leitao who was attributed the title due to his service to his country where he managed to establish a treaty with the people, Kings /Tribesman of Cabinda a country who were under attack who signed and agreed a Protectorate / colony to the Portuguese nation cemented by the Treaty, Conference of Berlin 1888 finishing the African Congo river decent wars led by the European International blue,yellow star alliance defying King Leopold of Belgium and setting a new turn of events for the African colonies.

The outdoor Pavilion whose history is related to the visit of King D. Carlos and Queen D. Amelia  of Portugal to Madeira Island 1906 where they visited Quinta do Pomar and had a royal lunch under the pavilion with the Viscount of Cacongo.

The President of Portugal, Tomaz in 1960 inaugurated the Levada dos Tornos, a water irrigation system (nowadays a famous tourist water pathway) under the Kings Pavilion of Quinta do Pomar.

The Chapel of Viscount Cacongo was built in 1927 by the second Viscount, Carlos Ernesto Leitao who used the template or copied the chapel of the main family urban residence at Quinta Mae dos Homens, Funchal. The Chapel has served ever since as an ex-libris to the local people and environment in Choupana, Quinta do Pomar.

In 2016 the Quinta suffered some damage due to fire that plagued Funchal, however the built structures and renaissance gardens suffered minimal damage with the exception of the central dwelling that was unroofed, but can be effectively rehabilitated having had local authorisation.
