Colourful ceramic Rooster of Barcelos, a traditional Portuguese symbol decorated with hearts and flowers

The Rooster of Barcelos
Among Portugal’s many fascinating traditions and symbols, few are as charming and recognisable as the ‘Galo de Barcelos' – the colourful rooster of Barcelos. Often beautifully crafted in ceramic and decorated with vibrant hearts, flowers and intricate designs, this much-loved symbol represents the spirit and character of Portugal.
The story of the rooster dates back to the 15th century in the northern town of Barcelos. At the time, the community was troubled by a serious unsolved crime, creating fear and uncertainty locally. One day, a humble pilgrim travelling through Barcelos on his way to Santiago de Compostela was accused of the crime. Despite insisting on his innocence and explaining the reason for his journey, he was arrested and sentenced to death.
Before his execution, the pilgrim made one final request – to speak to the judge who had condemned him. He was taken to the judge’s home, where a banquet was taking place. Standing before the judge, the pilgrim passionately declared that he was innocent and pointed towards a roast chicken on the table. He predicted that the chicken would crow at the moment of his hanging, proving that he was telling the truth.
The guests laughed at what seemed like an impossible claim, and the judge dismissed his plea. However, the judge had lost his appetite and set the chicken aside rather than eating it. When the time came for the execution, the pilgrim was taken to the gallows.
As the executioner prepared the rope, the roasted rooster suddenly stood up and crowed – exactly as the pilgrim had said. Realising the terrible mistake he had made, the judge rushed to save him. Fortunately, the rope had not been tied properly, and the pilgrim was rescued.
Years later, the pilgrim returned to Barcelos and created a cross in gratitude to the Virgin Mary and St James, whom he believed had helped save his life through this miracle. Known as the Cross of the Lord of the Rooster, it can still be seen today at the Archaeological Museum of Barcelos.
The rooster has become a symbol of honesty, wisdom, simplicity and good fortune and a reminder of Portugal’s rich heritage and timeless traditions.
