By the time the 1st of May came there where a total of four beaches in Algarve and all the beaches in Cascais that had started the ‘beach season' unlike the remainder of the country.  From the start of the month there will be the beach concessionaries already operating and all lifeguards will be at their posts ready to welcome the sun-lovers.

There are fifteen beaches in Cascais and these coupled with the four of the Algarve (in Vila do Bispo) and all will be prepared as far as infrastructure and safety are concerned, ensuring a care-free experience for all beach-goers.

The Algarve's other much-loved beaches including Albufeira, Rocha (Portimão) , and Oeiras' Torre will also be available to welcome visitors.

For anyone wanting to know when the official beach season actually begins a look at the government Gazette Diário da República is recommended.

Most of Portugal's beaches are scheduled to open when the official season begins which is either on the 1st or 15th of June.  The season continues until mid-to-late September but under certain conditions it can be extended until the 20th of October.

An extension has in fact been granted this year for the following beaches:  All Cascais beaches, Burgau, Mareta, Martinhal, as well as Salema beaches found in Vila do Bispo.
