Property for sale in Cascais, Lisbon & Lisbon Coast
Property in Cascais
Located on the Lisbon Coast and only thirty kilometers from Lisbon, Cascais is a former fishing village that is now counted as one of the wealthiest cities in all of Portugal. This resort city of about 35,000 residents first gained fame when the Portuguese royal family made Cascais their vacation destination of choice in the late 1800’s. This fame has not yet waned and Cascais remains an immensely popular destination for both visitors and those wanting to purchase Cascais property therein.
Part of the allure to Cascais is that the city has been able to mature into a modern and cosmopolitain city while retaining much of the old world charm and quaint atmosphere of the traditional fishing village that it once was. Even today the local catch is auctioned each morning in the waterfront square as it was hundreds of years ago. In addition traditional fishing boats decorated in myriad colors float in the harbor and add to the unique atmosphere of the city.
Despite Cascais’s traditional charm, evidence that this city is as modern as any other exists is plentiful. Alongside the small fishing boats can be found larger yachts or other pleasure craft in the harbor. Shops of every description offering both traditional local handicrafts as well as haute couture dot the city and just on the outskirts is a large shopping center complete with a cinema. Restaurants of every description offering both local and international cuisine cater to both the casual and high end crowd. And newly constructed villas and apartments offer the most modern amenities in luxurious surroundings. Add to this a fairly recently constructed marina and Cascais is as modern as any other European city. There is no doubt that while Cascais may to the casual observer appear suspended in time, it is indeed a world-class city.
Like many other cities in Portugal, Cascais has a rich and ancient history. Cascais’s important maritime history is documented in the Museu do Mar with a collection of boats, photographs, artifacts and other important relics. There are also several ancient churches in Cascais of archeological and architectural importance. The Nossa Senhora da Assunção is one example, and this particular church has a variety of stunning ecclesiastic items that are of historical value. This church also has on display a variety of paintings by a 17th century female painter.
Cascais may be located on the coast but green spaces are equally important to this city as the sandy ones. The Parque do Marechal Carmona is one of these green spaces in the city. This park has the usual tables under the trees and a variety of both shaded and open spaces, but it is also home to a small zoo that makes it a perfect place for an afternoon outing with the family.
Cascsais is home to the famous Boca do Inferno, or Mouth of Hell. Located on the outskirts of the city, this is an interesting natural formation where the rocks of the cliff meet the ocean. At certain times the blowhole sprays water high into the air and there is no better place to view the crashing of the Atlantic into the cliffs of the coast. Also just outside of the city is the Praia do Guincho. This famous beach has the added element of being dangerous. It has a very strong undercurrent and while hazardous to the casual swimmer it is sought after by surfers and windsurfers who seek the strong currents.
Like most other cities in Portugal, golf and tennis are never far away. Cascais and the surrounding area is home to a variety of golf courses, both nine and eighteen holes that challenge every player level.
Cascais lures all kinds of people to its sunny coastline. From the wealthy jet set crowd in search of world-class nightlife and recreation to those who work in Lisbon and everybody in between. There are a variety of kinds of homes available in Cascais including palatial villas that overlook the coastline to economical apartments in the older section of town. Properties are in high demand in Cascais and turnover times are relatively short. This makes it an ideal location for purchasing Cascais property as an investment or to join the other people who think that Cascais is the ideal place to live. Property for sale in Cascais is extremely sort after, it really is a stunning part of Portugal.
