Property for sale in Lagos, Western Algarve
Lagos Property
For those interested in buying Lagos property, it soon becomes apparent that they are spoilt for choice. Lagos is a simply stunning part of the Algarve and really does seem to have it all and the huge selection of property for sale in Lagos, will be able to match all tastes.
Lagos is a municipality in the Algarve region of southern Portugal. This municipality has approximately twenty seven thousand residents and the city proper is home to about eighteen thousand. Most of the people who live in Lagos live and work along the coastline in tourism related professions. Those who do live inland tend to work in the farming or agriculture industries.
Like many other towns located on the southern coast, Lagos is historically a maritime town with more than two thousand years of history. This sense of history is prevalent in Lagos; evidence of the rich history can be seen in Roman ruins in Lagos and the surrounding area as well as the museums and historical buildings which have stood against the ravages of time.
The history of the area includes years of occupation by various military powers as well as the fact that Lagos is where Prince Henry the Navigator primarily lived and it was from here that many expeditions to Africa were launched. In addition, Gil Eanes, another Portuguese explorer, called Lagos home. He is most famous for sailing well beyond Cape Bojador in 1434. The cape was at that time considered to be the end of the world.
Another interesting note in the history of Lagos is that it was through this area of Portugal that the first African slaves entered Europe. A 17th century building still stands on the site where the first slave markets were thought to be held in the 15th century.
Like many other areas around Lisbon, the ancient town of Lisbon was heavily damaged by the earthquake of 1744. What does remain, however, are some rebuilt walls circa the 16th century as well as a castle from the 17th century.
Other historical points of interest in the Lagos area include the Igreja de Santo António, an 18th century church which managed to survive the earthquake with little damage and the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira that is located at the entrance to the harbor. A regional museum is next to the church and is home to an array of artifacts and documents that help to explain the history of the area.
Of interest to the naturalist are several areas in Lagos including: Mercy Point, Golden Coast Grottos, Alvor Lagoon and the National Forest of Saint John’s Baron.
Today Lagos Property is considered one of most popular of the Algarve resort towns to buy real estate. This is primarily due to having the best beaches in the entire region. It not only has a multitude of beaches both large and small but some of the beaches are only accessible at low tide and they are very private. The Lagos area is also famous for the natural grottos and inexpensive boat tours can be arranged to see them from off shore. Lagos also has a wealth of other activities designed for the tourist including diving with the dolphins, swimming, surfing, kite-surfing and windsurfing, tennis, golf, bicycle rentals and more. There are schools and equipment rental places along the waterfront to help polish your skills or to teach you the basics.
Lagos is also an important hub for boaters as the large marina is equipped to handle boats of all sizes. People will berth their vessels in the marina and then retreat to one of the area’s rental or privately owned homes or apartments.
Lagos is blessed with a desirable climate that makes the area an attractive option for those looking to purchase investment or primary residence properties. People are drawn to this vibrant area not only because of the multitude of available services and facilities, but also for the quintessential Portuguese cobbled streets dotted with antique shops and quaint cafes. With a wide variety of golf course properties, marina homes, coastal villas, modern apartments and traditional rural farmhouses, there truly is something for everybody in Lagos.
The choice of Lagos property is wide and varied. From stunning multi million pound 5 star beach front villas. To beautiful typical Portuguese apartments within the towns fort walls for close to only a 100,000 Euros.
