Located in the western Algarve region of southern Portugal, Carvoeiro is a quaint and picturesque town that has become a very popular resort destination for both tourists and foreign property buyers. Once a sleepy fishing village, Carvoeiro’s growth exploded with the influx of tourists in the mid 20th century but even before being discovered by tourists it was a location of much interest, even since very early in man’s history.

Mankind has been drawn to the southern coast of Portugal for hundreds, even thousands of years and so it is no surprise to find ruins and other historical evidence to suggest that the area around Carvoeiro had been settled for a long, long time. Proof of Roman habitation exists in ruins and there is documentation to support the fact that there was quite a bit of naval activity as well. In fact, there was a naval battle in 1544 between a Turkish corsair named Xarramet and several ships under the command of D. Petro da Cunha.

In addition, just to the west of town are the ruins of an ancient fort that was built in 1670 to bolster the coastal defense of southern Portugal. Today, only a gate survives. At the same site is the Shrine of Nossa Senhora da Encarnacão that overlooks the sea and was constructed prior to the fort.

The very name of Carvoeiro derives from “Caboiere” which means a hamlet of fishermen and the name dates back to the Islamic medieval period. True to its name, fishing was the primary industry in this town since its inception.
There are a variety of other historical locations and points of interest nearby including:

• Igreja Matriz in Estombar. This national monument was built in the 1500’s on a hill overlooking the village and remains one of the best remaining examples of Manueline architecture in the Algarve region.
• The Forte de São João do Arade at Ferragudo was built in the 15th century as a lookout tower over the Arade Estuary and was expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries and in the 20th century it became the home of the poet Coelho Carvalho.

• The remains of medieval watchtowers of Atalaia and Quinta da Torre in the Ferragudo area were built to warn of the approach of invaders and pirates

These are just some of the areas of historical interest in the immediate area around Carvoeiro, but those interested in history will find a plethora of other interesting sites, ruins, castles and museums scattered throughout the entire region.

There are a variety of other interesting things to see and do in the Carvoeiro area. The unusual but natural occurring rock formations of Algar Seco were formed by the sea and the wind and when the tide is in the hollows and fissures of these rock formations are turned into a natural organ.

The villages of Ferragudo, Lagoa, Porches and Silves are each nearby and offer a variety of other things to entertain. Silves is home to the remains of a magnificent castle and splendid walks alongside the river while Porches is a traditional Portuguese village that has escaped the modernization of the area and remains unspoiled. Ferragudo is a traditional Portuguese fishing village that still to this day brings in the daily catch from the bounty of the sea. There is a tourist train that departs Carvoeiro on Tuesdays and Fridays for Ferragudo. It travels up the coast to this village then remains in the station for two hours while you have an opportunity to explore the town.

Golf is another popular pastime in the Algarve, and Carvoeiro is close to several courses including: Pinta, Gramacho and the course at Vale de Milho. Of course a short drive will get you to a myriad other courses of all play levels.

Carvoeiro is also home to the Carvoeiro Clube de Tenis which is nearly as popular a sport as golf, another great reason to buy a Carvoeiro property.

Aqualand or Slide and Splash are both nearby water parks, dolphin watching, deep sea fishing, scuba diving, horse back riding, wine tasting tours, pirate ship tours and more can all be found in and around Carvoeiro for those who want something slightly different to do. The Zoomarine Sealife Park in Guia as well as Krazy World in Algoz are also both fun options for the whole family.

The beach in Carvoeiro is a sheltered and sandy beach that is just off the main square in the town. Pedal boats, jet skis and diving equipment is all onsite for rent as are local fishing boats who’ll take you on a coastal tour of the area. There are a variety of other beaches in the area such as: Albandeira Beach, Marinha Beach, Benagil Beach, Carvalho Beach, Centianes Beach and more.

There is a great deal to see and do in Carvoeiro and the surrounding area which is part of the reason why it is so popular with both tourists and property buyers. The other reason is that Carvoeiro has maintained tight control over planning and building in the area. As a result the town has not been overrun by towering apartment complexes or hastily built residential areas.
