Portugal Rated Fourth in Renewable Energy

Portugal's Renewable Energy

Published on

Portugal leads the world in renewable energy. They are ranked fourth and they will continue to improve. They have very specific goals set that they will accomplish before 2012. They have a National Action Plan for Energy Efficiency and they take it very seriously. They have already achieved seventy nine percent of their goals and they are on target to not only achieve the goals they have set but to exceed them. They are fourth on the list in renewable energy and are only exceeded by Sweden, Finland and Austria.

They have the second largest wind farm in Europe and their use of wind energy puts them on the cutting edge. Wind energy is a natural resource that can be harnessed and used. The wind farm is an example of ways to harness our natural resources in a positive way. Wind energy could be the wave of the future teamed with other natural resources as well. It is great for the environment and if you want your country to be considered a green country.

Forty percent of all the energy we use is renewable. Portugal has found a way to take renewing this energy seriously and they have taken steps to make it happen. The annual savings for this would be one thousand seven hundred and thirty million dollars which is a huge reason to use renewable energy. When thinking of renewable energy many people do not think of the savings, but this could be a huge motivator for other countries to go green.

Renewable energy is great for independence as well. You do not have to rely on other countries to provide you with energy if you are self-sufficient. This is an important component and cannot be overlooked as one of the reasons to work towards having renewable energy. There are many countries that rely on others for energy, and taking away that dependency can mean a lot to their economy and their place in the world.

Saving the environment is also important and renewable energy can avoid the emission on over nine million tons of CO2. This is a huge motivator in finding a way to use renewable energy.

Electric cars and scooters are a great way to save energy and utilize renewable energy. Portugal is a front runner in the MOBL.E project which is a program to promote and use electric cars.

Portugal has many goals that include reducing the external energy dependency by seventy four percent. They also want to reduce the import of energy to twenty five percent. They have a target of thirty one percent of their energy being renewable energy. They also want to maximize the use of their natural resources such as wind, water and the sun. They have done really well with the wind energy and they continue to make advances in the other areas. They have the world’s largest photovoltaic centre within an urban environment.

Portugal has proven that you can be a green country and use all the resources at your disposal to be a world leader in renewable energy. They are above many of the larger countries because they have made the commitment to renewable energy and to future generations to have a better, more sustainable country. This will prove to be beneficial for them for future generations.
