Portugal is a European leader in green energy

Portugal just ran entirely on renewable energy for more than 6 days.
It set a new national record of 149 hours (source REN) beating its previous 131-hour record set in 2019.
From 31st October to 4th November, Portugal generated 1,102 GWh of renewable energy, 262 GWh more than the country consumed.
Portugal set 2 more records at the same time. Some gas-fired stations were left on, but they were only needed for 18 hours. Portugal’s grid was fossil-fuel-free for 131 of the 149 hours, almost tripling the previous record of 156 hours set in 2021.
Portugal also exported clean energy to Spain for 95 consecutive hours, smashing its previous record of 52 hours set in 2018.
Portugal set its own 'net zero by 2050' target in 2016, almost three years before most EU countries. In 2021, the country closed down its last coal plant, nine years ahead of its 2030 target. Portugal has also pledged to shut down its gas plants by 2040, which could potentially put the country on track to achieve carbon neutrality as early as 2045.
This year, 68% of Portugal’s electricity has been generated renewably. Wind and hydropower produce just over half of Portugal's energy. Overall, the country is among the 20 nations best prepared for the energy transition.
The information has been verified by the Centre for Energy and Materials of the World Economic Forum. The Centre is responsible for creating coalitions and insights that promote sustainable, secure and equitable energy, thereby fostering economic and social development at both global and local levels.
