March Tourist Figures - Huge Increase

During the month of March 2011, millions more tourists visited Portugal than the month prior. On a month to month basis 2.6 million more people made Portugal their destination in March as compared to February; a rise of 6.3 percent as communicated by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

In a complimentary release it was detailed that accommodations for tourists rose 2.1 percent on a year-on-year basis throughout Portugal with an estimated 2.4 million people seeking accommodations during the first three months of 2011. In a statement from the INE, it was relayed that due to Carnival taking place in March of 2011, the overall positive results could be associated with this event. With the rise in figures showing a boost at predominately four and five star accommodations covering hotels, apart-hotels, guest homes, and self-catering apartments, both non-national and national tourists contributed to this rise. In stark comparison, resorts during the same period reported a 7.1 percent decrease in demand with fewer nights spent in this means of accommodation as compared to all other types.

The INE also reports that foreign visitors arrived predominately from the UK, France, and Brazil. These three countries accounted for more than 70 percent of all visitors to Portugal during the month of March. With fewer Spaniards visiting in March than in February, this tourist group had a noticeable decline.

Providing a generalized summary, the INE concluded that region-wise there was an improvement in tourism visitors with noticeable rises in visitors to Madeira, Algarve, and Alentejo. German, Dutch, and British visitors to Algarve increased while a decline was noticed in visitors to the Azores. Gross revenues for hotel establishments were 119.2 million of which 77.5 million was generated directly from room rates. Both of these figures are increases as compared to last year's turnovers of 3.6 percent and 5.4 percent respectively.
