Tavira is the third largest municipality in the Algarve and is well known for the dominating fish industry. The huge commercial harbor is outstanding and at one time exported fish, dry fruits and wine around the world. However, today this harbor is used very little, but the seafood, which is caught in the area, is incredible.
To display the appreciation of the top quality seafood which is caught, and sold in the area, there is a Seafood festival held every year. The local people are proud of their heritage, and they enjoy preparing and displaying the local seafood. During May, the whole of Tavira came to life, and there are several different restaurants that participated.
The seafood festival is now in the 9th year, and the popularity continues to grow with visitors from other countries visiting for the outstanding food. The exciting event took place over several nights, and 15 local restaurants where involved with the festival. We found the different restaurants throughout the parishes in Tavira, including Santiago, Santa Maria and Santa Lucia.
Diversity is the key for the seafood festival, and every parish and restaurant will have their own specialty. This enables seafood lovers to combine the whole experience and try different dishes during the festival. During the festival we were able to combine ones love of seafood, with the local traditions and customs which are still popular today.
There is another excellent reason people attend the seafood festival, as one lucky person won a weekend in one of the amazing hotels in the area. These hotels include Vila Gale Hotels, Pousadas de Portugal, Imperial Residential and Casa Viana. All of these are prestigious, and winning made one a lucky persons vacation even more special.
The festival followed the local philosophy of life, which is that you should enjoy the pleasures of life in a straightforward relaxed way. The local people believe that this philosophy ensures that they remain young, and embrace everything life has to offer. The seafood, which is presented during the festival is a bonus, and the people ensure that they savor every moment.
Tunafish and octopus are both very popular seafood dishes enjoyed during the seafood festival, and the restaurants ensured that delicious fare is prepared. The local fishermen excel at catching the best fish for the seafood festival.
The success of the previous festivals has ensured that this event is growing in popularity, which brings more tourists to the area. People were able enjoy the local area, and explore everything that Tavira had to offer. The excellent wine and healthy food tastes far better in a quaint, traditional restaurant surrounded by locals.
