The city is popular for its yearly car racing event called “O circuito de Vila Real” since 1931, with its golden age in the 60’s, 70’s, when world renowned racing drivers, like Stirling Moss, David Pipper and John Miles participated.
Vila Real is a city with many beautiful old churches and chapels to visit and other historically and culturally important monuments, like the Torre de Quintela, Santuário de Panoias, Casa de Diogo Cão (the house of a 15th century navigator who got to river Zair in Africa), etc. The city boosts of small cafés, tabernas, tasquinhas and restaurants with delicious local and national plates. Here you can find the amazing natural park, Parque Natural de Alvão, also the Corgo Parque, named after the river that runs through it. Corgo Parque park has an area of 33ha of green lungs for the city and covers a large variety of areas especially prepared for picnics and BBQs, sport equipment and activities, children’s playground and even public swimming pools!
