Tourism in March ‘over a billion euros’!

Portugal’s revenue from tourism during March exceeded a billion euros, according to the Bank of Portugal – a level of income never before achieved outside of the peak holiday season.

This is an increase of more than 20% over revenue generated in March 2017, although obviously assisted by Easter starting in March this year.

Secretary of State for Tourism Ana Mendes Godinho said in a press statement that it shows the authorities have succeeded in “affirming Portugal as an attractive country for the whole year round”. She added that tourist numbers have been increasing month on month since January, with the “rhythm of growth in income more than duplicating growth in the number of visitors”.

This is straight after the news that Chinese tourists spent €130 million in Portugal last year - a 40% increase on 2016.

Luís Filipe Silva, a member of the board of directors for the Portugal National Tourism Board, described the spending as “an impressive amount” and said it “contributed towards the balance of payments”. There were 256,735 Chinese tourists visiting Portugal last year – an increase of more than 41%, the Portuguese authorities said, attributing the increase to the direct flights that started between the two countries. China is now the world’s largest source of tourists.

It seems, at last, Portugal - which is famous for its waves - is now riding one. A plethora of positive data! There are more people visiting, more people buying, more people living here.
