With a new year just around the corner, 2026 could be the year you decide to invest in a home in Portugal. But if you are worried about overcoming the language barrier, then a new survey should give you a little peace of mind!
According to an international study conducted in 123 countries by the EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI), Portugal ranked globally in 6th place in terms of English proficiency.
The study analyses data from 2.2 million non-native English speakers in 111 countries and regions. Portugal ranks 6th in the world for the proficiency of English as a second language.
Portugal is only slightly behind the Netherlands, which enjoys first place, with the second place slot going to Croatia, Austria 3rd, Germany 4th and Norway 5th.
On a scale of 800 points, the Portuguese obtained 612 points, well above the world average of 488 points, according to the Education First English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) 2025 ranking.
Constança Oliveira e Sousa, from EF in Portugal, highlighted the impact of artificial intelligence (AI)-based translation tools on oral and written expression: “These tools allow for instant translations, which can decrease the motivation to learn a language from the beginning,” she argued. On the other hand, she acknowledged that AI can also bring new opportunities for language learning, namely through personalised exercises accessible at any time of day.
Over 267 million people around the world speak Portuguese, making it the 5th most spoken language in the world. Portuguese is the official language in 10 countries due to Portugal's colonial past. But do not confuse Brazilian Portuguese with European - there are numerous differences, and many applications teach the Brazilian version.
If you master just a handful of Portuguese words, you’ll instantly win over the locals. Immersing yourself in the language and putting new skills to use opens the door to new friendships and a more authentic connection with the culture.
