Portugal has 53 ‘Zero Pollution’ beaches

Published on

The environmental association ZERO (Associação Sistema Terrestre Sustentável), announced last week that 53 beaches in 30 municipalities of Portugal have earned the distinction of Zero Pollution beaches.

The beaches are evaluated according to parameters that ZERO considers to be “truly what is desired on a European scale within the framework of the European Ecological Pact, in particular within the scope of the Action Plan for Zero Pollution”.

To receive the coveted title, a beach must obtain impeccable scores when its water is tested by the association. If a single vestige of microbiological contamination is detected throughout the last three bathing seasons, the beach is automatically excluded.

Although the figure is 15 less than 2020, according to ZERO, all beaches distinguished last year as Zero Pollution beaches are classified, under the law, as beaches with “excellent” water quality. However, if they had a single analysis in which the presence of microorganisms was detected, even if a long way off from the limit, they could no longer be included in this list.

There are 43 Zero Pollution beaches on the Portuguese mainland, six in the Azores and four in Madeira.

In the Algarve, there are 14 beaches in six municipalities with no pollution in the water, sand and air. Tavira has 4 beaches lauded - Barril, Cabanas-Mar, Ilha de Tavira-Mar and Terra Estreita; Faro has 3 - Barreta, Culatra-Mar and Ilha do Farol-Mar, while Vila do Bispo has 3 - Castelejo, Cordoama and Martinhal.

Loulé has two Zero Pollution beaches: Ancão and Quinta do Lago. Aljezur (Vale Figueira) and Castro Marim (Alagoa-Altura) have a beach each.

All the beaches are coastal, meaning no inland beach has passed this demanding test. The full list can be found here
