October events in Portugal
Published on
The weather is a little cooler and the nights are drawing in – it’s the perfect time to be in Portugal! There are tons of fantastic events to get involved with - these are our favourite five:
1st – 6th October – Nature Festival – Madeira
The Madeira Nature Festival promotes tourist activities for a week based on nature, thus encouraging direct contact with the rich natural heritage of the Madeira archipelago.
The festival offers a variety of activities on land, air, and sea, catering to visitors of all ages. In addition to these, there are numerous events celebrating sports, entertainment, Madeiran culture, and traditions. In downtown Funchal, there will be a photography exhibition, a small typical religious festivity, a regional gastronomy show, and performances by folk dancing groups.
5th October – Republic Day – Nationwide
After the Portuguese Revolution on 5 October 1910, the Portuguese Republican Party created a provisional government. Republic Day is a festive occasion celebrated every year throughout Portugal, featuring parades and official ceremonies. National flags are hoisted, and everyone is invited to participate in events highlighting the country's history.
11th – 13th October – Superbike World Championship – Estoril
Vibrate with the vertiginous speed of the superbikes taking part in the penultimate stage of the Superbike World Championship 2024 in Estoril.
Renowned for its competitive edge, the SBK championship has its traditional centre in Europe but is also hosted in various parts of the globe. This competition is even more thrilling because no prototypes are used - only bikes built from commercial models. As in other motorsports, each event counts for two simultaneous championships – pilots and brands.
15th – 27th October – Phantom of the Opera – Lisbon
"The Phantom of the Opera", Andrew Lloyd Webber's most acclaimed musical, arrives in Lisbon. Based on the novel by Gaston Leroux, it has won more than 70 major theatre awards and has been seen by more than 160 million people.
This extraordinary love story takes place in 19th-century Paris, where a musical genius known only as "The Phantom" lurks in the depths of the Paris Opera and is mesmerised by the talents and beauty of a young soprano named Christine Daaé. With a West End and Broadway cast and stunning sets, this is a production not to be missed.
17th – 27th October - National Gastronomy Festival – Santarem
Enjoy Portuguese gastronomy at the country's main fair - the National Gastronomy Festival, now in its 43rd year and held in Santarém in October and November. Aromatic herbs, spices, cheese, fresh fish and convent sweets, such as the famous custard tart ‘Pasteis de Belém’, are some of the delicacies that you will find here.
