The idyllic beach of Carvoeiro in the west of the Algarve has just officially been named European Best Beach 2018 by European Best Destinations, the official website dedicated to the promotion of culture and tourism in Europe.

The competition to choose Europe’s best beaches is organised every year by the website through more than 300 tourism offices and 13,000 travellers from 129 countries in partnership with EDEN, "European Destinations of Excellence" who look at destinations which have chosen sustainable environment-friendly tourism.

Nine Portuguese beaches made the cut, four of them in the Algarve. The website waxes lyrical about Carvoeiro saying:

“Carvoeiro is probably one of the most beautiful places we have seen during our travels in Europe. Once on the spot get ready to be stunned by this place; you will soon decide to empty your bank account, get rid of your return flight ticket and stay in this little corner of paradise for the rest of your life. The sea is beautiful, the water is neither too hot nor too cold, the waves can be strong or, on the contrary, gentle enough for paddling and discovering the coves around, Carvoeiro has the charm of a little town of Algarve”.

The list also includes Fuzeta, on Ilha da Armona in Olhão, with “fine sand beaches, turquoise waters, quietness and sweet scenery” Armação de Pêra, “sandy stretches as far as the eye can see, framed by golden cliffs” Praia da Marinha, “one of the most emblematic and beautiful beaches of Portugal”, and Praia da Cova Redonda, “a real paradise, with calm clear waters”.

Other Portuguese beaches included Praia dos Galapinhos (Setúbal), Berlenga Island (Peniche), Praia Miramar (Vila Nova de Gaia) and Porto Santo (in Madeira).

This follows the news that there are now a glorious 332 Blue Flag beaches in Portugal – 17 more than 2017.
