Portugal Leads Europe In Holidays

While the summer holiday season winds down around Europe, the Portuguese still have plenty of vacation time coming up; a recent study has revealed that among European nations, Portugal's citizens enjoy more paid and bank holidays than almost any other.

Following recent studies conducted the study comparing the number of paid and bank holidays in European countries - and the findings were that the Portuguese have significantly more holidays than the average throughout Europe. The United Kingdom was worst off, with an average of 29 days off throughout the year. By contrast, Portuguese citizens and residents of the country enjoy up to 29 days off, including paid leave, national holidays and bank holidays, which places the country on a par with Sweden.

Twelve countries were looked at during the study, with the average number of holidays in Europe being 34 days per year. UK residents worked an average of six more days a year than their neighbors, tied with Ireland and the Netherlands.

Other than Portugal, the countries where citizens and residents enjoyed the most days off were Denmark, Sweden and some regions of Germany, with workers having 38 or 39 days off, which is four and five days above the average, respectively.

As far as paid leave goes, the Danish led the field with 27 paid days leave, followed by the French, Norwegians, Finns, Swedes and Portuguese with 25 days of paid leave. Bringing up the rear were the Dutch, Irish, Italians and British, with a mere 20 days paid leave per year.

In terms of national holidays, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and some parts of Germany have the most, with 14 holidays annually; and the UK came in last in this category as well, with just eight national holidays each year.
