It has officially become a town in 1916 and currently it is very popular town for the large and long beach with its promenade and string of shops, bars and restaurants with the largest variety and freshest of fish, as well as for the dense pine trees around it, where every weekend or bank holiday there will be locals and visitors having a picnique or a BBQ.
Quarteira is in the heart of Algarve, close to the Faro aiport, dozens of golf courses and all the amenities you can think of, also includes the luxury resort of Vilamoura and its internationally awarded marina, luxury modern hotels and rich night life.
The main street parallel with the sea is Avendia Sá Carneiro and you will find many typical Pastelarias (coffee shops) with delicious pastries and healthy and very resnably priced lunches and dinners. Quarteira also hosts the freshs fruit and fish market right from the fishermen’s boats straigth on your plate!
Every Wednesday all local farmers come and display proudly their products, home made local chouriço and other cold meats and cheeses, a diversity of types of olives, some with oregano, some with chilli, etc.. freshest berries, watermelon, tomatoes, free range eggs and so much more! It is worth visiting and doing some shopping.
Quarteira is also the place with many cultural events during the year: either religious holidays in name of local popular saints, or sport, health and children events, as well as the Antiques Fair and open air concerts with national singers.
