Portimao Property

Here at PortugalProperty.com, you will find a wide selection of Portimao Property from traditional Portuguese apartments to luxury 5 star beachfront Villas.

Arguably the second largest city in the Algarve region, Portimão is just behind Faro in terms of population and size. Portimao property is owned mostly by the local Portuguese inhabitants, although, it seems that more and more Brits/second home owners have started buying property in Portimao, for a many different reason.

Portimao, originally known as Vila Nova de Portimão, it wasn’t until it was incorporated as a city in 1924 that it became known solely as Portimão. Today the city of Portimão has over 45,000 residents and the municipality is home to more than 52,000.

Portimão is a nonconformist in comparison to the rest of the country in that this particular city and to an extent the entire municipality, have focused more on modernizing buildings and infrastructure rather than preserving the past. As such the city has evolved into a cosmopolitan destination for international tourists and property seekers.

This culturally rich municipality was the main shopping center for the Algarve region during the ‘70’s and ‘80’s. The city of Portimão has retained much of that commercialization with new construction constantly ongoing. In fact, recently a marina was constructed to accommodate the growing marine traffic in the Algarve. This marina is adjacent to the Praia da Rocha and the entire area has become a large draw as with the marina came numerous restaurants and bars as well as boutiques.

Portimão is a very active area for various sports. Surfing and kitesurfing competitions as well as Beach Football, the Lisbon-Dakar Rally, and international Rhythmic Gymnastic competitions are all held in Portimão. This is also the start to the world famous Portimão Global Ocean Race.

The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve was built nearby and is home to a variety of Grand Prix and other international motorized races and competitions.
Perhaps in spite of Portimão’s efforts to modernize, there is still a rich history and culture as well as natural beauty to be found in this area. This municipality is home to the Ria de Alvor which is a protected area of natural wetlands and home to a myriad of species both avian and ground dwelling.

This last undeveloped section of coastline in the Algarve is now under protected status so that its pristine beauty will be preserved.
Of historical interest, Portimão is home to a variety of sites and buildings with varying ages. The main church of the Mexilhoeira Grande parish is of particular interest and is dated to the 16th century. The Roman site Abicada is famous for its 1st century villa complete with colorful mosaics. Alcalar is home to a Neolithic burial ground and there is
another similar one at Monte Canelas.

The traditionally town of Alvor is also of significant historical interest as it is home to various ancient churches and the remains of a castle wall. The museums in Alvor celebrate the rich history of the area. This is also a popular destination for visitors or new residents as the town has lovingly maintained many aspects of authentic Portuguese architecture and building.

Like the rest of the Algarve region, the municipality of Portimão is also home to resplendent beaches and golf. From beaches that stretch off into the distance to smaller more intimate beaches, the silky sands, turquoise waters and endless days of sunshine are powerful lures to the area.

Powerful indeed are these lures; the area has enjoyed a steady influx of visitors and people wishing to purchase property in order to live a better life. Many people from across the European Union arrive in Portimão with the aim of building a better lifestyle for their families. As such, Portimão has a wide variety of properties available from ultra traditional to ultra modern. This diverse municipality has grown up around the stable tourism industry and has been driven to provide for those people whose visits are both temporary and permanent. Regardless the impetus to visit Portimão you’re sure to be delighted by all that the area has to offer.
