Lisbon – one big museum

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal is a city and a port, situated beside the Tejo River. The westernmost point of continental Europe, it functions as the primary port, the largest city, and the hub for commerce, politics, and tourism in the country. Lisbon's natural harbour, one of the most exquisite in the world, is largely responsible for its historical significance. It was from this harbour that ships from Portuguese discoveries in the 15th and 16th centuries sailed to chart new sea routes for trade and to conquer new lands.

Lisbon is an absurdly beautiful capital, even by European standards. Perched at the base of a picturesque castle are the majestic, statue-filled squares and sophisticated monochrome calçada pavements of the city's beautiful 18th-century centre, known as the Baixa with its Pombaline-styled buildings. Founded by the Phoenicians and then expanded by the Romans, Moors, and Crusader knights, it is one of the oldest fortresses in Europe.

Lisbon's communities are dispersed over seven hills in and around downtown Baixa. Meander through the cobblestone streets of Alfama or Bairro Alto, passing art nouveau cafes, bohemian pubs, and dance clubs.  Ride the tram down to Belém, home to the best pastel de nata custard tarts in the world and sample a ‘bica’ coffee – a small expresso – said to stand for “beba isto com açúcar” – drink this with sugar.
