We travel on a path behind Pedras d´Él Rey and come across a mantle of bougainvilleas, right in the middle of summer. We have arrived at our destination.... we are on a path chosen by the municipality to allow bike riders the chance to know the region…
The bougainvilleas were planted with guides along the ground, over 10,000m2 provide the sight with a red mantle; the olive trees here are more than 400 years old, from the Alqueva dam, before the lake invaded the land. More than 300 came and have been placed for 16 years; producing 300 litres of olive oil per year and continue with the same vigour as always.
We follow about 500 metres along a wooden fence and see the entrance to the property.
It is 20 minutes from Faro international airport and another 20 minutes from the Guadiana River, in the municipality of Tavira, there extends 6.7 h of land, framed with the Arroio stream on the left-hand side after Pedras d´El Rey and facing the Ria Formosa, allowing the view to spread out to the sea.
Sitting on the terrace, we watch the movements of the tide, which twice a day fills an immense sea, from the land facing the Ria where the limits of the property are, to the sands of the Atlantic Ocean. In front of the island of Tavira, about 9 km long, from the designated beach of Tavira, to the “naked man” beach with the colour of the Caribbean waters...
The land acquired in 2000, had no vegetation whatsoever. It was all built from scratch in 2004, after being duly approved by the Regional Directorate for Agriculture, with a project by Architect José Mexia. A monitored water network was installed, originating from the dam and electricity that allows clocks to illuminate the entire property by sectors.
Four avenues were designed and planted:
- Alameda das Palmeiras, at the entrance with a Spanish transplant. They immediately assumed a remarkable size and adaptation, until today
- Alameda dos Plátanos, planted along a clearing, meadow bordering the Arroio stream
- Alameda das Casuarinas, between the alleys of Olives and platan trees
- Alameda das Oliveiras, placed towards a second building, thatched and prepared to make a small apartment, in front, there is a well/tank that can be recovered as a support pool for this location
On the upper terrace, a swimming pool with a view of the lake up to the ocean at high tide and at low tide you can see the channel that connects the beginning of the Ria Formosa in Quinta do Lago to Cacela. It is during these hours that flamingos and other birds visit as this whole region is protected and the best place for nature lovers.
It is really the best place for birdwatching….
Along the canal, at low tide, we see the canoe lovers, who enjoy it without polluting the air with fuel or noise ... everything is the perfect setting to protect the environment ... we are invited to do so.
Hence the choice at the property of a bike lane and then the Ria, on the Ocean and along the island for unforgettable walks
Birds, as we said, abound in the Ria, attracting scholars and photographers to the region.
The beaches, with only essential support to be able to enjoy, extend many kilometres, completely deserted. In spring and autumn, there is nothing better than walking along the sea, barefoot, with the water at a mild temperature.
The “deck” in front of the dining room is an excellent “spot” to savour a meal, read or meditate. From here, as in the upper deck, you can observe the tides that accompany a view of the Ria Formosa, filling and pouring, twice a day, changing the landscape always free and open to the ocean
The dune in front was built with sand from the Ria and with native plants. Placing of signs that identify all species, placed along the path built in a natural way with wooden sleepers, allows you to have a true study of plants and flowers that throughout the year have their own colouring for each season.
The materials used and the decoration that will stay in the house, allow a perfect integration of nature and spaces. Only a few personalised decorative elements will be removed. But the vast majority will remain, in order to allow you to feel, enjoy and change according to your own personal taste.
The water features in a small interior mirror, at the entrance to the kitchen or in the rooftop pool, allows us to take in the proximity of the Ria and the ocean, essential elements that nature offers us.
Dawn on the deck allows you to see the sunrise and the entrance and the spreading of light over the sea and the property.
Framed in nature, with a differentiating construction, a house with colonial characteristics was born, although also with a typical touch of the fishermen of this region of the Algarve and which is finished off in a multiplicity of trips, transmitted to each corner of the construction:
- resorts in the midst of African coutadas,
- wall coverings and ceramics, Moroccan main door, as well as tadlack on the walls of the bathrooms,
- with colours from Mexico, as well as the tree of life by Zihuatanejo, placed in a corridor;
The outer coating of Weber, allows easy maintenance and the colour of the local earth was chosen, to constitute the mono masses of projection of the walls.
The horizontal stripes, typical of the Medina of Marrakech, were masterfully executed by an Algarvian operator.
The South African stem, was applied by a company made up of Mozambicans, in Almancil, after decolonisation. In a recent maintenance job done every 15 years, the same workers applied new replacement material from South Africa.
The sleepers placed on the built dune originated from the remodelling of the railway infrastructure of the Algarve line.
So far we can observe from the decks, the Ria, the ocean, the dune, the sleepers marking the paths, the bougainvillea, the palm trees, the olive trees, but also the materials chosen in the construction of the house, from the mono masses to the culms, to the tiles, thus showing the journeys and transporting the culture of the world to Arroio, without ever losing the identity of the place.
The thatched roof protection construction allows the temperature to drop by 5 degrees centigrade.
The back of the house has two support sheds: one for two vehicles and the other for four vehicles, has an entrance to the kitchen and on the left-hand side, a technical room with all the equipment, boiler, vacuum, floor heating, a water tank and solar panels on the roof.
The ceramic coating on the water fountain was built with tiles purchased in Morocco, just like those placed on the dome of the room.
We arrive at the house, it projects along a single floor over 400 m2 and a wooden shading terrace, covered by a thatched structure
The penthouse is accessed by a staircase and an elevator, a swimming pool, a kitchen support area and above it with a set of connecting dishes. Reserved clothes drying area.
In the house, we find 5 rooms with private bathrooms and two social bathrooms, one on each floor. Each room has its own colour, just like the bathrooms with tadlack-coated walls. 4 bedrooms have direct access to the terrace and with a view over the garden, Ria Formosa and Ocean.
After analysing the construction details, we would like to highlight the two large terraces with more than 300 m2. As we mentioned, one on the bedroom floor and the other on the roof.
In the house, we also find a living room with 90 m2, a cinema and music room, a laundry room, a kitchen and a dining room.
All the rooms have immense light and take advantage of their surroundings. The photographs illustrate these details.
The floor of the common areas, kitchen and bathrooms, was built with sand from Ria Formosa, with shells collected in the same place and the resin placed by an Italian specialist who, between two Versace works in Milan, went to the Arroio to participate in this “ travel". The floor is heated with water-soaked tubing.
In the bedrooms, the floor is covered with wood, with water heating in the master bedroom, which makes it a very comfortable environment. They have fans too, although they work and are more decorative, as all rooms have an air conditioning system, hot and cold in all rooms.
The kitchen, very practical opens to the dining room, with oven, microwave, fridge, pantry area with freezer and induction hob. A counter beside the plate which allows quick and practical movement, with two support benches
The well-lit corridors have a brick-covered ceiling, in a vaulted construction made by an Alentejo professional.
The heated floor has the reef placed on top of the Ria sand and shells caught on the beach.
The large glass windows throughout the house allow the extraordinary view of the Ria not to be missed. At every moment we know where we are.
All windows are protected with a metallic remote control and self-locking shutters, although the whole house has a video surveillance system connected to a security company.
The dining room has the characteristic elements of the building: the ceiling, the floor and the light.
The rooms, 5 suites, each have their own colour, with walls covered with another type of mono mass and with tadlack bathrooms where the colour of the respective room is kept.
The rooms follow, as mentioned, the colours of the bathrooms and four with doors, with a hammock, facing the terrace overlooking the garden and Ria, with air conditioning and a ceiling fan.
The yellow room has the same characteristics; in addition to these orange and grey.
The view from each room is repeated in an enormous desire to go onto the outside terrace and admire the view...
The cinema room has a brick ceiling with indirect light and is suitable for staying up to date with the news, listening to music or watching a film.
The round living room, with about 90 m2, has a very local cover, wood on the floor with heated floor, fans, three on the ceiling, mono pasta covering the walls, a fireplace and eminently African decor ...
In addition to everything, the lounge is open to the rest of the house and has three huge shutters allowing you to see the dunes, the Ria and the ocean. Even when it rains, sitting and reading by the fireplace, allow you to enjoy unique moments.
On the table is an album with the history of the property, from the purchase in an advertisement in a 2 cm2 real estate newspaper to its current state. Remembering is living.
The access ladder to the upper terrace, going up, makes a unique view happen both during the day and at night; looking at the starry sky reminds us of nights in Africa and takes us to where the imagination can travel.
It is difficult to find the environment, the setting, nature, the materials, the colours, the peace, gathered in one space where we can stroll, read, enjoy the best juice from the Algarvian oranges, the unique bread, the best fish and seafood in the world.
