About the area:
Although the village of Boliqueime is considered very quiet, this suits many of the people who choose to visit this part of the Algarve. The village has a quaint, old fashioned feel to it and you can experience a true feel of what Portugal is about. With a small church, a handful of shops, a bank, post office and a scattering of bars and restaurants some would argue what more could you want. This style of village is perfect for people who are looking to sit back, relax and enjoy the pace of life.
The restaurants and bars that are situated within Boliqueime specialize in fresh, locally grown produce, and you can tell the quality of every dish. There are often no set menus as the proprietors will supply and cook what they have available on that day. With the local fish markets supplying everyone in the area, you are guaranteed some of the best local fish dishes in the Algarve.
Boliqueime is small, but it can be reached easily by the main roads and is only a short 20km from Faro airport, making it ideal for exploring further afield. Only 5 minutes away is the village of Loule, which is the main hub for the area. However, if you want tranquility, spectacular scenery and amazing culture staying in Boliqueime will offer it all.
Although this village is 20 minutes from the coast the view is breath taking, and you can see the Atlantic shimmering in the distance from many properties. The weather is often considered to be perfect in this area of the Algarve with comfortable temperatures, and brilliant blue skies. The breeze that travels through the village allows you to cool down during the day, as you begin to merge in with the locals.
Boliqueime is a lovely little town, part of the Loule district. It is located 10 minutes drive from Vilamoura inland to the West. Easy accessible by the National Road 125 or the highway A22. The town’s name comes from the word “bulicame” which means “thermal spring” and the origin of this town is closely connected to the Genovese, Venetians and Sicilians who used to travel in the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries to this place, for the tuna and whale fishing.
Boliquieme is a popular and sought after location not only for the locals, but also for holiday home owners or expats who want to be close to all amenities, but at the same time have more space, land, peace and privacy that a country side offers. With fertile fields and lovely valleys, Bolquieme has some great views over the ocean and a door open towards the hills at the back with many picturesque places popular for the rural and natural tourism.
Despite it’s small size, Boliqueime has a rich cultural patrimony with many appealing points for tourists, like: the traditional cobbledstone streets, the Matriz church, Sao Faustino church, a museum and the traditional wind mills and wells that used to be used for water supply back in the time.
Boliqueime is host of many religious and cultural fairs: Nossa Senhora da Dores on the 4th of August and 17th of October, São Luís e São Sebastião, in September and the São Faustino party, on the Sunday following Easter.
Excellent activities in the area are the walks in the country side, by the small rivers with crystal clear waters, the old wells and wind mills, the high points for observation of distant places and a variety of vegetation, like the wonderfully smelling Almond trees when in bloom!
