About the area...

Almádena resembles many rural villages in the Algarve. Its housing stock mainly consists of small white houses with traditional chimneys, a domestic architectural style influenced by the Moorish occupation of the area up to the thirteenth century. There is a small market for farmers' produce and a community centre in the heart of the village as well as several bars and restaurants. The village is located in the Vale de Barão. It lies 3 km north of the fishing village of Burgau and 4 km from Luz itself, just outside of the boundary of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.


Praia da Luz ( "Beach of Light" ). Like most towns on the Algarve coast, it was originally a fisherman's village. Even though today it has grown into a popular seaside resort it still manages to retain a lot of its old-world charm and at the same time offering the holiday maker golden sands, superb dining and first class facilities.
The bay is protected to the East by the famous Rocha Negra cliff, a product of the Monchique region's volcano lava flow from some 150 million years ago. To the West is the old 16th-century fort built to ward off pirates but now is a smart restaurant which has some spectacular views from its terraces.

Burgau is easy to drive through and not be over-awed by its charm. You need to explore on foot to fully appreciate this little gem. The labyrinth of narrow streets leading down to the beach, with the white washed houses leaning crookedly against each other, the beach of fine sand backed by rocky outcrops and the broad Atlantic horizon all work their magic to create an atmosphere of great tranquillity. Burgau is known as the smuggler's village and it is easy to imagine lots of clandestine activity going on in the hidden alleys and lanes, in times gone by.

Costa Vicentina natural park the is the most Westerly point of the Algarve and stretches from Burgau on the south coast for 90km up the west coast into the Alentejo. A protected area said to be one of the last stretches of undeveloped coastline in mainland Europe. A diverse selection of flora and fauna some of which cannot be found anywhere else in the World. known as the wild West with it beautiful beaches, rugged coastline is a mecca for walkers, cyclists, surfers, beach goers and nature lovers.
