While not properly a city per se, Vilamoura is more of a resort town with the population of a city. Currently the population of Vilamoura is around sixteen thousand residents, and this resort community is a popular location for purchasing property for a multitude of reasons.
The master planned community of Vilamoura is located between the larger cities of Faro and Albufeira in the Algarve region of Portugal. Ultimately designed to be self sufficient, this area encapsulates all that the tourist or the expat property buyer might look for. In addition to the miles of beaches and nearby world class golf courses, Vilamoura is home to a large modern marina. The marina is one of the central areas to this resort town and there are many charming boutiques, restaurants and cafes which line the boardwalk. The boardwalk itself is a popular place to walk in the cool of the evening and you can watch the boats come and go or just bob on the calm waters as the sun sets in the distance.
Vilamoura has captured the very essence of Portugal. Architecture, the cuisine, the recreation; everything is distinctly Portuguese blended with modern services and facilities. Vilamoura is home to the usual array of water sports but also has equestrian facilities, lawn bowling greens, deep sea fishing, surfing and a golf academy for polishing up on your game. Once polished, any of the area’s five golf courses should provide an adequate challenge. In addition to shopping, casinos and a multitude of restaurants, there is much available for the less active person as well. Even just sitting on a balcony in the morning as the cool ocean breezes drift past and the deep azure of the sky overhead promises yet another perfect day is a pleasure.
One of the more unique features of Vilamoura is the Old Village. Property in this area is very much in demand for both purchase and rent. This up-scale area is vintage Portugal and has its own community swimming pools and distinct properties. This community within a community is an attractive area with immaculately groomed landscapes and well maintained properties that make it a favored destination for those looking for short term rental properties.
The marina is one of the primary features in Vilamoura. The marina has berths for more than 1000 vessels and caters to a clientele that is both just visiting and those that use this marina as their primary moor. The marina offers world class facilities and amenities to the boater and it is not unusual to see the jet set crowd sail into the harbor.
Modern and ancient visitors alike have been drawn to Vilamoura. Evidence of the area first being settled by the Romans in the first century still exists and the Cerro da Vila Roman ruins and museum has many artifacts on display and are one of the more popular historical sites in Vilamoura. Vilamoura is also uniquely located in the Algarve and is within easy distance of a multitude of historical sites like the Quarteira Market, ruins of castles, ancient menhirs and more.
