Ferragudo
About Ferragudo
Ferragudo is a quaint village in the Algarve, which is situated in the west of the municipality of Lagoa. Although it is a very small village with a population of just over 1800 residents, it is well worth visiting whilst in the country. Up until the 20th century the village was a thriving fishing village, with the fisherman trawling both the Atlantic Ocean and the local Arade River.
Today, however, it is the tourist industry that provides the most income to the villagers, and many of the locals will travel to other areas to supplement their income. Although the fishing industry in Ferragudo has declined, many tourists fish around the coast with great results. As well as the great fishing the stunning scenery and excellent beaches attract many of visitors to the area.
The scenery in Ferragudo is very rustic and includes breath taking cliffs, underground caves and vent chimneys to explore. Many of the beaches are natural, offering great rock pools for people to search for local creatures. However, there are a huge number of beautiful sandy beaches that ensure you can spend hours relaxing soaking up the sun.
The Grande beach and Angrinha beach are both very popular with locals and tourists, with the stunning fort of Sao Joao de Arade standing proudly in-between them. There is plenty to do along these beaches including many great water sports for you to enjoy. The water is considered perfect for wind surfing, which is what attracts many of the local people. Although the beaches get very busy, they are large ensuring that there is plenty of room for everyone.
The village itself offers an idyllic approach to the Algarve and is incredibly laid back, and very popular with people looking for a relaxed vacation. Although it is quiet there, are all the basic amenities available, including shops, bars and restaurants. As with many small villages in the Algarve, the village square is often the hive of activity. This is where the locals gather to enjoy the fantastic climate, and daily chatter.
The cobbled streets that lead from the square offer many quaint cafes and bars for you to relax in and enjoy the local cuisine. The fish restaurants are highly recommended as you would expect in a fishing village, and you will never be disappointed by the food in Ferragudo. Although you can wander through the center of the village with ease, travelling out of the village may require a car. You can easily hire a car to go exploring and ensure that you see all that this area has to offer.
Ferragudo is ideal for people who want to enjoy the real Algarve and spend time with the locals in the bars and restaurants. Although you can easily travel further afield, you will find that you begin to miss the peace and quiet of the small fishing village. With picturesque scenery, stunning beaches and beautiful coastal walks, there is plenty to do. You can spend your long, lazy days on the beaches, before wandering through the village deciding where to eat. Vacations do not get any more perfect than that.
