More than just a fishing village, Ericeira is one of the most peaceful and beautiful seaside resort towns in Portugal. Ericeira is located in the municipality of Mafra in the west coast of Portugal. It has several rich fishing villages that serve as the livelihood of many natives in Ericeira. The name of Ericeira originated from Ouriceira, which came from Ouri'o. The word is the Portuguese name for sea urchin. It is about 30 kilometers away from heart of Portugal, Lisbon.
Ericeira takes pride in its beautiful beaches. In fact, their beaches are hosts to the ASP World Tour Surf Championship. The place is considered as a top candidate for being the best location for surfers because of its calm waves and clear waters. Many tourists and locals alike enjoy swimming and water sports in any of the 40 beaches of Ericeira. One of the best European surf spots is the Coxos Break Point. It is located far north of the town and is highly recommended for the professional surfers.
Moreover, Ericeria is proud of its own Ericeira Surf Clube, which happens to one of the biggest and first Portuguese surf club and association. The group was founded in 1993 and since then on, they have participated in various tournaments and championships. The Ericeira Surf Clube also spearheads surfing events from local, regional, and national levels. They conduct workshops, surfing lessons, and surfing tips through their school. Both the local athletes and tourists will find the school a very big help, especially among those who are just starting to discover their surfing skills.
Apart from sports, Ericeira has a very rich musical culture. Many cannot get enough of the beautiful songs that their Filarmonica Cultural Ericeira plays. The said local philharmonic group takes pride in performing all the famous songs of their culture. They promulgate it and perform in the villages to make the people aware of how rich the musical culture of Ericeira is. Because of their love for music, Ericeira offers free musical school and lessons for people who want to learn more about the village's musical heritage.
