About Bensafrim

Bensafrim is a sleepy village situated in the municipality of Lagos, which has just over 1000 residents. The unusual name for this village is from the Arabic name of Benassaharim, as the village was once an Agrarian settlement. Until recently the only form of transport would have been a donkey, however, there have been vast improvements to the road structure.

You can now access the village far easier than before, making it an interesting place for tourists to venture to and explore. As well as new roads the local governments have also invested money to improve the whole area. There are new facilities, water supplies and a new village square for the locals to sit and enjoy. Although the pace of life in Bensafrim is still as relaxed, it has become better equipped to deal with the tourists.

If you are looking for a livelier place to stay on your visit to the Algarve, Bensafrim is not the place for you. However, it has begun to attract people who are looking for a piece of the real Portugal, where they can relax and unwind. Although there are not huge amounts to do in the village, you can spend time exploring the natural beauty of the area. Horse riding is very popular and can give you the ideal way to explore.

As you ride through the valleys and mountains of the picturesque villages nearby, you will begin to appreciate why people live in the area. Although you may feel as if you are very lost at times, your guides will show you every quaint nook of the area. After a long day riding and exploring, you will find the ideal place to relax is in the village square with the locals.

You can enjoy the friendly banter that they give each other, over an ice cold glass of beer. If you like beaches and water, the beach in Bensafrim will not disappoint and as with many in the Algarve it is perfect. Not only can you enjoy the ideal climate on the golden sandy beach, but also the amazing water sports and swimming on offer in the water.

You may think that there is not much to do when you first arrive in this amazing quaint village, however, your time here will be filled from morning until night. You can practice your Portuguese with the locals, read a book on the sands, and enjoy an afternoon sat in the village square. Before long you will be fitting in with the way of life in Bensafrim, and not wanting to go back to your hectic lifestyle.

Although many vacations in the Algarve are action packed, staying in this incredible village with breath taking surroundings will remind you of what Portugal is really like. If you do crave nightlife or shopping, Lagos is only a short car journey. However, you will find that after a couple of hours in the busier town, you will want to return to Bensafrim and the daily debates with the locals.
