Outstanding Talent at the Fiesa International Sand Sculpture Festival

Algarve sand festival

If you’re looking for a fantastic vacation spot, you ought to check out the Fiesa International Sand Sculpture Festival in Pera, Algarve. This mega exhibition organized by Prosandart has been an ongoing event since 2003.

There are three events each year, with a new theme chosen for each unique event. Talented sand sculpting experts fly in from all over the world to participate in this event, gradually shaping and scraping thirty-five thousand tons of sand in a fifteen thousand square meter area. The result: a truly outstanding display of artistic workmanship.

The event is considered to be the largest sand sculpture festival in the world, based on the sheer space of the festival grounds and the incredible size of the sculptures themselves. While festivals like this do exist elsewhere on a smaller scale, the amazing range of designs and the impressive size of the Fiesa Festival make it an unforgettable event.

Bringing kids along? Fiesa dedicates an entire play area to kids and teens who want to try their hand at sand sculpting! Your little artists can let loose their artistic expression on several tons of sand while you relax in the gorgeous climate of Algarve.

The past and the present

Every year is truly more impressive than the previous, as new artists break onto the scene and returning artists bring enhanced skill and fresh ideas to the table. The passion of the sculptors is evident in every piece, dating back to the very first exhibition in 2003.

Fiesa 2003 brought together a small, yet passionate group of sand sculptors. With the “Dream Land” theme in mind, artists gave shape to 15,000 tons of sand. The results were outstanding and garnered huge media attention. The coverage raised awareness about the event, and the festival has continued to grow year after year.

Themes and sculptures are an amazing stretch of creativity, and each event is something to look forward to. From the witches, fairies, and giants of the “Stories of Enchantment” theme in 2004, to epic themes from Star Wars and Jurassic Park for the “Hollywood” theme of 2008, visitors are always in for a treat.

The “Wonders of the World” exhibition in 2007 saw impressive sand replicas of the Eiffel Tower, Sydney Opera House and the Temples of Angkor, while the “Living World” theme of 2010 inspired both familiar flora and fauna of our natural world as well as a bevy of mythological creatures and extraterrestrial imaginations.

The theme of 2012 is “Idols”, and visitors can expect tributes to iconic figures from all walks of life. Exhibitions range from sports superstars to ancient gods to performing icons like Marilyn Monroe, The Beatles and Michael Jackson.
