New Garden Planned In Historic Graca

Graca Lisbon

One of the most popular attractions in Lisbon is Graca and it may soon become even more so. The garden of the convent adjoining the church has been closed to the public for a number of years now, but it has been announced that the garden will soon be ready to be reopened this fall. There are plans in the works to convert the former convent into a hotel, but the garden will remain open to the public and stay connected to the popular terrace with its scenic views of the city.

Work has already begun, with potentially problematic trees being removed; these trees will be replaced by nearly 180 different species of plants. When completed, the 800,000 Euro project will become the largest green space in the historic old city of Lisbon and will include a central lawn and playgrounds. The garden is projected to become a focal point of this part of Lisbon and to improve the quality of life for residents as well as attracting visitors to the area.
