The Mais Cultura 2013 or More Culture programme was launched on May 12 in Portugal’s capital. The programme was created through a partnership between 13 of Lisbon’s neighbourhoods.

The programme will see its start in Santa Catarina neighbourhood, where a dance performance will take place at 4 pm.

Lisbon’s Department of Culture worked on the cultural programme, together with the 13 neighbourhoods that were challenged to contribute to the project. Mais Cultura 2013 aims to stimulate the inhabitants of Lisbon to enjoy a number of different cultural events and performances without spending anything.

Being close to the public, turning Lisbon into a cultural destination and encouraging locals to participate in the cultural landscape are all aims of the Mais Cultura 2013 programme, Lisbon Councillor for Culture Catarina Vaz Pinto said.

Due to cultural, social or financial reasons, many Lisbon inhabitants find themselves incapable of attending performances and cultural events. The new programme is expected to make culture more accessible and affordable among these groups of people.

Instead of having to visit a cultural landmark, the residents of Lisbon’s neighbourhoods will now have culture coming to them. If possible, the programme will create new places for cultural events, Catarina Vaz Pinto said.

Mais Cultura 2013 programme will last from May to December 2013. The 13 neighbourhoods that participate in the programme will enjoy a number of dance performances, plays, film screenings, photographic exhibitions, workshops and entertaining events for the children. Attendance is free of charge for all of the Mais Cultura events.

Lisbon is well-known among tourists as a cultural tourism destination. The city brags a big number of historic landmarks and evidence of its diversified cultural background can be explored on every street. Palaces, churches and aristocratic castles all impress visitors and lure tourists to Portugal’s capital.

The city is also known for its interesting cultural life. Events, fairs, shows, performances and exhibitions are held in Portugal’s capital on a regular basis. When it comes to festivals, June is one of the most hectic months. Parties and parades are dedicated to different saints, which makes the month perfect for the visitors that want to see the Portuguese culture up, close and personal.

Fado, the music of Portugal is one of the most distinctive cultural symbols of the country. Everyone who wants to get acquainted with Fado can find a live performance that is taking place in Lisbon during the time of the visit. Fado is emotional, melancholic and passionate. Everyone who has listened to a live fado performance at least once has fallen in love with the music.

Mais Cultura 2013 will add some new opportunities and intriguing events to the Lisbon cultural landscape. Exploring the events calendar before a visit to Lisbon is the best opportunity to find something interesting to see and to do.
