Lisbon Crowned The European City Of The Year For 2012

Lisbon further cemented it's charm and allure on the world's stage by being deemed the European City Of The Year 2012 by London's Academy Of Urbanism.

The Academy of Urbanism held a ceremony last last friday in the Grand Connaught Rooms, London. In attendance at the ceremony was the deputy mayor of Lisbon, architect Manuel Salgado.

While there was stiff competition from other European cities, Lisbon rose to the top of of the considerations. However, Oslo and Gothenburg received honorable mentions.

A team of 500 academics evaluated Lisbon August of 2011. The four categories that the city was evaluated by were new practices, assumed centralisation, administrative multiple choices, and the management of opportunity. Also, architectural projects such as the renovation of Mouraria and riverside urban projects were taken into consideration as well.

The Academy of Urbanism was founded in 2006. This is an stand-alone organisation that is made up of members of the political, the social, and the economic spectrum across Ireland and Britain.

The purpose of the organisation is to promote the understanding of urbanism through scholarship, through dialogue and through in sharing knowledge from various peers.

On Thursday of this week, the city of Lisbon held a promotional event in London in order to promote its status as a lucrative place for business and investments.

Organised by the Portuguese Embassy in London, Lisbon - Exploring an Emergent Atlantic Business Hub brought together British and Portuguese businessmen and women and included speeches by Lisbon Mayor António Costa, Lisbon Counselor for Economy and Innovation, Graça Fonseca, Zeinal Bava, CEO of Portugal Telecom, Eric van Leuven, Managing Partner of Cushman & Wakefield Portugal, as well as chief representatives of easyJet who revealed their main reasons for choosing Lisbon for the company’s latest hub.
