The International Marina Certification recently awarded the Lagos Marina the prestigious 5 Star Award. The Lagos Marina is the first marina in the Iberian Peninsula to be honored with the award.  The Lagos Marina was created by the Grupo MSF and includes a tourism facility that is visited by boats from 30 different countries.

The Lagos Marina is located on the western side of the Algarve. Algarve Portugal has an amazing coastline and a wide selection of beaches. There are regular beaches with convergence of normal populations, and unspoiled beaches that only the locals know about. The beaches near Lagos are known to be the most beautiful of all. Lagos also boasts caves for exploration. Home to the Ponta da Piedade, Lagos also offers beautiful rock formations that many visitors admire.

The Lagos Marina is located in one of the most beautiful towns on the coast. Nearly 2000 boats a year visit here and travel from countries all over the world. With a variety of hotels to choose from, as well as private villas and luxury resorts, the Marina offers visitors a luxurious stay. In addition to the amazing beaches, there are eight quality golf courses available for guests to visit.

Though the Lagos Marina is located on the Atlantic Ocean, Lagos literally means, "lakes."  The town of Lagos shares its location with both the Atlantic Ocean as well as the Bensafrim River. The most visited city of the Algarve, the citizens of Lagos work in hospitality and tourism to support their lifestyles on the beautiful coastline. Renowned for its nightlife and summer parties, the town of Lagos is eclectic and awe inspiring.

The Five Star Award to the Lagos Marina seems to be a nod toward the beautiful history that the town boasts.  Lagos, Celtic for Lacobriga, was an important harbor during the settlement of the Carthaginians during their war against the Romans. The town was renamed Zawaia (meaning Lago, or Lake) during the eighth century. Under King Pedro the first, Lagos declared its independence in 1361.  Shortly thereafter, King Joao sheltered his personal fleet of boats in the harbor of Lagos. From there he eventually gained conquest of Ceuta, which was the first step that eventually opened the Arabian world to Europe, leading to the Age of Discovery. During this time, Lagos established itself as an important harbor during the Portuguese Exploration. Jaunts to Morocco and Africa were common during Prince Henry the Navigator's rule. Cape Bojador was believed to be "the end of the world" but Lagos Native Gil Eanes disproved this widely held belief in 1434.

Lagos has a deep history as a harbor and marina. Some would say that the Lagos Marina (or harbor) was to the Age of Discovery what Cape Canaveral Florida was during NASA's early space exercises and explorations.  Ships have come and gone from this seafaring harbor, but Lagos has stood the test of time. That the Marina has received a Five Star Award is but another feather in the heat of this marvelous and beautiful coastal town.
