Cruise ships bring in thousands of passengers into Portimao and the Algarve

With six cruise ships docking in Portimao during the last half of May, it is expected that in excess of 4,000 passengers and 1,800 crew members have disembarked during the period from 18 to 26 May alone. A review of Portuguese ports shows that this Algarvean port is the third busiest only after Lisbon and Leixoes. A quick review of arrivals into Portimao in recent days shows the following: 18 May Holland America Line's ‘Ryndam' ship passed down the Arade River prior to arriving in Portimao.

Records indicate a passenger list of 1,613 passengers and 618 crew members were on board. The Ryndam is expected to return to Portimao during the month of August.

19 May The Ryndam was followed by the Seabourn Cruise Line's ‘Seabourn Pride' carrying 212 passengers with a crew of 160 on the following Thursday.

20 May Making another visit to Portimao was the Silversea Cruises' ‘Silver Cloud' arriving with 210 crew members and 296 passengers on-board.

21 May ‘Vistamar' a vessel of the Plantours' line is scheduled to dock on Saturday carrying 299 passengers along with a crew of 110.

24 May The ‘Grand Voyager' of the Ibero Cruceros' line is scheduled to follow the Vistamar on 24 May with 840 passengers and a crew of 360.

26 May Bringing an additional 884 passengers and a crew of 340 to Portimao, the additional arrival of the ‘Albatros,' a Phonix Reisen's ship is expected to arrive on 26 May.

The numbers listed above, when added to the number of people arriving on the `V¢lcan de Tijarafe,' the weekly ferry, the number of arrivals into Portimao is expected to rise by 23 percent. Looking further out into 2011, a total of 64 ships are expected to arrive in Portimao by the end of November 2011.
