The British are beginning to respond to the call for alternative tourism markets, such as nature and gastronomy, says the country's Secretary of State For Tourism.

Cecilia Merireles says that not only are the British traveling to Portugal for it's sunny beaches and great weather, but the British are also discovering that Portugal offers culture, nature, and a rich culinary experiences as well. Usually, the British flock to Algarve and Madeira, but other locations of Portugal are becoming vastly attractive. Central Portugal and the Alentejo are experience tourist growth.

2009 and 2010 saw a 2.3 percent dip in British tourist. However, 2010 and 2011 saw that tourism doubled over the national average to over 8.1 percent.

Cecilia Meireles was in London last week in order participate in the World Travel Market conference. This is one of the world's largest travel and tourism fairs. This event took place between November 7th and November 10th of this year. The marketing slogan is the same as the previous year's; "Prove Portugal". In other words, the tourist board of Portugal would like to for tourist to prove to themselves why Portugal is such a draw for natural and for culinary tourism.

To further prove Portugal, the Portugal stand featured samples of Portuguese coffees, pastries, olive oil, cheeses, port wine, canapés, and Portuguese cocktails. There was also a tasting area manned by instructors and students of the Lisbon, Lamego, and Portimao schools of Hotels and Tourism. The highlight at the tasting area was an ice cream stand which featured 10 different flavors of ice cream.

Cecilia Meireles from the World Travel Market believes that Portugal offers it's own unique niche to the sun and sea destinations. The World Travel Market is one of the largest travel fairs, which boasts over 40k visitors per year. Cecilia hopes to help the organization to figure out what attracts visitors to Portugal. There is also a hope to work with the government and with other specialists to develop a new residential tourism niche.
