Alentejo Receives Award

For the third consecutive year Alentejo received the distinction for the Best National Tourism Region. The annual Publituris Portugal Travel Awards 2012, distinctions that are often called the national tourism Oscars, were handed out in the middle of September.

Alentejo once again managed to take the distinction away from one of its biggest competitors, Algarve region.

The recognition resulted from a lot of hard work, Alentejo tourism official Ceia da Silva said. It was dedicated to the region itself and to all of the individuals that demonstrated interest in it as a tourism destination, da Silva concluded.

Da Silva said that winning the prestigious distinction for a third consecutive time was a great honor. The award meant a lot because for over four decades, the Publituris Portugal Travel Awards have been determining what the best tourism spots in the country are.

National tourism awards were handed out during a luxurious and spectacular gala event that took place at the Monastery of Santa Clara in Coimbra. The best national tourism region is one of the most important awards of the night.

Apart from Alentejo, 16 Portuguese and internationally-based companies received a distinction for the work they had done towards increasing the quality of the Portuguese tourism product.

Abreu won the award for the best national travel agency and best website. Macau was recognized as the best international destination. Mario Machado, the CEO of SANA Hotels and Top Atlantico administrator, won the tourism personality of the year award. TAP Portugal received the distinction for the best national air carrier.

While the prestigious ceremony is taking place, Turismo de Portuga is discussing the future of sustainable tourism in the country. The conference is taking place in Lisbon and some of the most well-known exerts in the spheres of resource management, construction and architecture are participating.

The main goal of the seminar is to find ways that will stimulate entrepreneurs in the tourism niche to introduce sustainable practices. Sustainability is ultimately going to make the Portuguese tourism product more competitive, officials commented. The theme of the event is inspired by the World Tourism Day that is taking place under the slogan “tourism and sustainable energy: drivers of sustainable development.”
