Luxury Cascais Real Estate
Cascais, Portugal, is a cosmopolitan coastal town suburb of Lisbon. Just 20 miles from the capital city, Cascais, once a small fishing village, is now an exclusive resort town that can be found nestling on the Estoril coastline. It first found fame as the place where the Portuguese royal family holidayed in the latter part of the 19th century, and in modern history, during the Second World War when Portugal remained neutral, it was a haven for many of Europe's fleeing nobility hailing from Bulgaria, Hungary, Spain and Italy. Today, with a population of just 35,000, it is one of the richest areas in Portugal. Those in the know often buy Cascais property
The town itself is beautiful and picturesque with its quaint cobble stone streets, and it is easy to see why it is held in such high esteem. The architecture is superb, and the town is pure elegance. Many of the houses and mansions that have been built in the area were built by the nobility that settled here. The style is both luxuriously extravagant opulence, and it has continued to attract wealthy people to the area.
Cascais also boasts a wonderful new marina where the yachts that belong to the rich and famous are moored. Near the center of the town you will find the Grutus do Poco Velho, a collection of underground caves that were discovered towards the end of the 19th century. They date back all the way to Neolithic times, and are now one of the town's great tourist attractions. The nearby sea is home to the Boca do Inferno. This is a huge rock just off the coast of the town, and when the wind blows strongly, it whips up the waves which crash against it creating plumes of spray high into the air, and accompanied by a loud booming sound, hence the literal translation of the name which means The Mouth of Hell.
